M. A. Taylor

Funeral services for M. A. Taylor prominent farmer and citizen, who died Friday at his home about a mile above Reedy, near Duke Station, were held at his home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. S. Warren of Sandy Summit assisted by Rev. B. H. Barnes of Parkersburg. A large concourse of friends and relatives were present. Funeral Director T. W. Dye had charge of the remains and burial was made in the Seaman cemetery, in sight of the home of the deceased.

Obituary

"Martin Autaway Taylor son of Thornton T. and Eliza Vanhorn Taylor was born December 28, 1864 on Finch Creek, Lewis County, West Virginia, at which place I lived until about eight years old, and with my parents moved to Freeman's Creek and their I remained to manhood. In 1880 I have my heart to the Lord and professed religion, joining the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Lewis County and never moved my membership." (Mr. Taylor dictated his own obituary to this point.) He departed this life May 22, 1936 at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 24 days at his home near Reedy.

He was married Dec. 24, 1889 to Julia Rebecca Hess and to this union seven children were born. One son Virgil died when eleven days old. One daughter Bessie Taylor Warren died Oct. 29, 1919. His wife preceded him in death 18 years ago.

Surviving children are: Mrs. J. W. Haney, Mrs. T. R, Eaton and Mrs. Leander Atkinson of Parkersburg, Mrs. H. C. Fore and Mrs. C. C. Stewart of Reedy. Fifteen grand children: Mrs. Charles Lucas, Jr., Mrs. Stanley Lacy, Mrs. Ralph Weldon, Mrs. Oris Camp, Theodore, Oscar. Elsie, Fauntella, Charles Eugene and Edith Atkinson, Oleta Ruth, Jean Haralene and Rita Nelle Fore, Olin Warren, and Doris Irene Stewart. Three great grandchildren also survive: Charles Everett and Lorraine Lucas, and Patty Belle Weldon. Two brothers and one half sister survive John and Charley Taylor and Mrs. Ova Lester of Weston, W.Va. an a host of other relatives and friends.

His father died about 20 years ago and his mother about 60 years ago. One brother Parscal and a half brother, Simeon and two sisters, Mrs. Susan Frances Woofter and Eliza Jane Knapp preceded him in death.

Mr. Taylor has lived a religious life, always willing to help in time of need. He bore his sickness with patience and left the evidence with his family that he was prepared for Heaven and patiently waited for the end to come.

Among those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. George W. White, and two sons Forrest and John; Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Taylor and grand-daughter Miss, Janice Taylor all of Weston and Mrs. John Imboden and the latter's husband of Jackson's Mill; Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Burnside, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Kershner , and Mr. and Mrs. French Kershner all of Weston; Misses Bertha and Eliza Woofter of Camden and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Woofter and son Darrell of Dekalb, Olen Warren of Wheeling, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Welden and daughter Lillian, Mr. John McAtee, Dr. and Mrs. R. D. Lattimer, Mrs. Ethel Hess and two sons, Cleophas and Charles of Parkersburg, Miss Margaret Url and Mr, and Mrs. Johnson of Williamstown.

Susan Roberts

Susan (Stewart) Roberts died May 13, 1904. She was born at Reedy August 17, 1833, and lived in Reedy all her life except twelve years in Ravenswood. She married Thomas Roberts in 1852. All their nine children survive: L. W. Roberts of Albuquerque, New Mexico; N. M. Roberts. O. D. Roberts, T. T. Roberts, Lillie Roberts and Amanda Roberts Blaine of Reedy; Mollie Roberts Lester of Sisterville, WV; Nettie Roberts Sayre or Parkersburg, WV; Sallie Roberts Lowe of Gandeeville, WV and Allie Roberts Rader of Spencer, WV.

Buried in the Reedy Stewart Cemetery.

She was raised at the old homestead where Dr. Carter now lives.

Col. Thomas Asbury Roberts died 1888; born 1808; buried in the Reedy Stewart Cemetery by Susan (Stewart) Roberts.

Samuel Wesley Roberts

Samuel Wesley Roberts was buried April 14, 1904. He was born Nov. 4, 1840. He came from Ohio to this state in 1853. He leaves his wife, Mattie Stewart Roberts, one daughter, Mrs. Clara McMillon; two grandchildren, Hazel and Ernest McMillon; his mother, three brothers and six sisters. For many years he had been the faithful agent at the Reedy depot. William H. Evans was appointed in his stead.

Rebecca Hess

Manda Rebecca (Lowther) Hess was born in Lewis County, Nov. 20, 1866, the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Burns) Lowther.

She was united in marriage Jan.7, 1892, to Alonzo Hess. To this union one son Rommie was born, in whose home at Sandy Summit, she was living at time of her death.

She was born in the spiritual kingdom in early life and united with the M. E. Church but later joining the M. P. Church.

She moved to Roane County in 1903, with her husband who was called from her embrace about five years ago to his rest above.

After months of suffering which she patiently endured, on April 15, 1929, she was called by her Savior, to join her husband and loved ones in that Home where there is no death, at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 25 days.

She was a devoted mother and companion kind to all who know her. She passed on in the triumph of a living faith. In her last hours she was claiming the promise: "Faithful unto death, then, the crown".

She is survived by her son Rommie Hess, four grand children, Lillian, Lorene, Lloyd and Lonzo Hess. Six brothers J. H., J. A., P. E., and R. F. Lowther of Linn, Gilmer County, and W. E. Lowther of Brown, Harrison County, and a host of relatives and friends who will miss her kind, patient presence. But their loss is her eternal gain. Loved ones, so live that you all may be united in the Home above where we never say Good Bye.
Rev. J. H. Keffer

The funeral services were conducted at the Reedy M. E. Church South last Wednesday by Rev. E. S. Warren of Sandy Summit and Rev. Keffer of Seaman. The remains, in charge of undertaker Cottle & Lester, were laid to rest in the Board cemetery a short distance above Reedy.

There were many beautiful floral tributes. A wreath was given by the Heck Oil Company and another by the employees of the Heck Company, he son being employed by this company.

It was on the Hess farm that developments started which resulted in the great oil field at Liverpool which is being developed by the A. S. Hick Oil Co.

Among those here last Thursday attending the funeral of Mrs. Rebecca Hess were four of her brothers from Gilmer and Harrison Counties, Mrs. Rebecca Hedges and son Willie, Mrs. and Mrs. Harley Knapp of Little Creek, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hess of Clendenin, Mrs. T. R. Eaton of Vienna, Mrs. J. W. Haney, Mrs. Leander Atkinson and M. M. Parsons of Parkersburg.

Opha Ray Hess

Opha Ray Hess, aged 46, of 632 Camden street died at 1 o'clock this morning at his home following an illness of two years. Born in Roane county he was the son of Mrs. Amy Hess and the late Wesley B. Hess and before his illness was employed with the Grossman Shoe Co. He had resided in Parkersburg for the past 21 years and was a member of the IOOF lodge.

Surviving in addition to he mother are his wife, Mrs. Cleo Hamric Hess; two brothers, Russell and Howard Hess, and one sister, Mrs. Carl V. Davis all of this city. Four nieces and five nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Baptist Temple church with the Rev. T. B. Turley officiating. Internment will follow in the IOOF cemetery. The body will be removed to the Franklin funeral home to the late residence Saturday afternoon and will remain there until one hour prior to services when it will be taken to the church.
