My Dad, Gene Suttle, was born and raised in Roane County. When his school burned in 1926 or 27, the county did not have the money to build another one. A local farmer gave his permission to use his sheep barn as a school so that is where my Dad went to school for two years. The other student's were Dad's brothers, Dick and Frank Suttle, Ed Hall, Vera Hall, Harold Schrekengaust, Oral Schrekengaust, Gladys Schrekengaust, Dorothy Schrekengaust, Dorcy Schrekengaust, Arlene Summers, Avis Chatman, James Chatman, John Chatman.  Dad is 84 now, so if he has left anyone out, it was not intentional.  Two years ago we took Dad back to Roane County and one of the places he really wanted to visit was his old school house. He was very surprised to find it still standing. Otto school... sheep barn, was located on the farm of Hence Hall and Ray Redding. It is the first house below the mouth of Orchard Run three miles below Otto and about 1 1/2 miles above the mouth of Beech. They went to school there and also held church and Sunday School there as well until the Cove Run School was built. Hope you enjoyed this as much as we did.

Rock Creek School - Year is unknown

Rock Creek runs from Ambler Ridge (near Lynch Ridge) to the Pocatalico River; Rock Creek School was on Rock Creek approx. two miles from the headwaters. There were two Rock Creek Schools, the earlier one burned and the second built. Jeff Hively was a teacher in the first school. I believe Rock Creek School was located in Walton District. This photo is  of the second school.

This is a picture of Sunny Hill School taken in 1924. It was located on the Okey Chapman farm along the Big Pigeon Road in Roane County near Amma. The photograph shows the students of the Sunny Hill School and other children who came to participate in the activities leading up to the annual community dinner.

The flags were provided by my father, Floyd Gibson who also arranged the parade maneuvers that were a part of the activities. Being a patriotic occasion, the large flag held by Mr. Gibson was the focal point of all the maneuvers.  Regardless of how complex the maneuver, everyone had to be facing the flag at the end.

Teachers during this time period were Hugh Caldwell, Ina Phillips, Ora Engle, Irene Carper, and Maxine Carper. I especially remember Irene and how she encouraged a student to perform well by awarding premiums. The premiums were nothing more than pieces of paper she had made up but when we had accumulated five of these we could turn them in for a new pencil or a "Big Chief" tablet.

Later a new school was built across the road on the McCune farm but the community dinner was still held on the Chapman property in a large pine grove. The "new" Sunny Hill school was torn down many years ago.

The Amma School, a two room school with kitchen, is now the Amma Senior Citizens building. I attended this school from 1937 to 1943. Changes noted recently were air conditioners, a ramp for the handicapped, and a well house has been built which now has an electric pump. My teachers were Maxine (Carper) Byrd, Lena Cobb, Madge (Looney) Crane, Orva (Engle) Malm, and Dewey Ashley. The bathrooms were about thirty yards to the east of this building, one for the boys and one for the girls.  There are plans to tear down this building and construct a new one for the Senior Citizens Activities when adequate funds are available. Most all of the one room and two room schools in Roane County have now been torn down. My mother, Ruby (Looney) Nida, taught at many of them including Amma, Newton, Pine Grove, Sunny Hill, Big Pigeon, Beech Hill, Roadside and probably others that I have forgotten.
