Mrs. Sheppard Dies of Burns Tuesday Wife of Prominent Tariff Farmer Succumbs to Burns Received When Oil Can Explodes.
Mrs. Austin Sheppard, wife of a prominent Tariff farmer, was fatally burned Tuesday morning when an oil can exploded while she was building a fire in the kitchen stove. The accident occurred at 11 a.m. and she died of burns at 4 p.m. She was 68 years of age.
Funeral services will be held this morning at 10 o?clock at the Henry?s Fork Baptist. Church, with the Rev. Herby Spencer officiating. Burial will be made in the Tariff cemetery.
Mrs. Sheppard had been using crude oil to get the fire started and was holding a can in her hand when it exploded setting fire to her clothes. A daughter, Mrs. Holly Courtney, heard her screams and rushed to her aid, succeeded in extinguishing the flames. A physician was called immediately, but she could not survive the burns about her face and arms.
She is survived by her husband fives sons, Boyd at home; D.H. and Newton Sheppard, Akron; Alonzo and Charley, of Dawes; and three daughters, Mrs. Holly Courtney, at home; Mrs. Carl Looney, Looneyville; and Mrs. Howard Boggs, Looneyville. One daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ellis, proceeded her in death a few years ago.

Mrs. Albert Epling
Mrs. Albert Epling of Clover, died at the DePue hospital last week and was buried in the Epling Chapel cemetery, Saturday morning. The Rev. Herbert Spencer preached the funeral. She was the mother of twelve children, most of whom are small, one an infant. The funeral was attended by one of the largest crowds ever to gather at this church, which is proof of the love and respect with which she was held by her neighbors. Mr. W. R. Monroe and daughter, Mollie, Mr. And Mrs. Romie Vineyard, Mrs. Earl Epling and Hobert Epling of Akron, were here to attend the funeral.

FLU CLAIMS LITTLE CHILD
Mildred Elanore, aged 6 years, pretty and bright little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Wolfe, of Lick Fork; died Tuesday, December 24th, of the Flu. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.

Louie O. Steinbeck
Last rites for Louie Otmer Steinbeck, 74, Charleston , who died Friday at his home, were conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Vandale Funeral Home. Dr. Joseph Clare Hoffman of Charleston officiated. Burial was in the Spencer Cemetery.
He had been associated with the L. O. Steinbeck Lumber Company for 54 years. He had been ill for several months.
Son of the late Chris H. and Armenta Rule Steinbeck, he is survived by this widow, Mrs. Elsie Conley Steinbeck, and a daughter, Mrs. W. J. Britt, both of Charleston; a son, C. F. Steinbeck, Weston, one brother, P. G. Steinbeck, Parkersburg, and a half-sister, Mrs. Gordie Boyles of Spencer.

Gone to his Reward
Again the beckoning hand of death has called from a long and useful life another one of the prominent and leading citizens of Roane county, in the person of Joseph F Carpenter, who was born April 22, 1861 and died January 29 1915 at his home at Peniel on Middle Reedy
He was united in marriage in 1884 to Miss Blandis Wolfe. To them were born 8 children, 3 having preceded him to the great beyond. The remaining children are Oren who is married and lives in Rochester, Penn., Roy also married and lives near Peniel. Morris, Erma and Gladys at home with Mother.
Mr. Carpenter was son of Joseph Carpenter and was one of a family of 12 children 3 having preceded him to the great beyond those surviving are John C, Ben and Lige of near Spencer, . Mrs. C. C. Cutright of Lick Fork, Mrs. Andy Bowyer of Spencer. Mrs. Jane Hopkins of Kentucky , Mrs Mose Reynolds of near Reedyville and Mrs. David Batton of Reedy.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of M.E. Church South funeral services were conducted Sunday by his pastor, Rev P..L..O'Dell and interment was made in the Peniel Cemetery.
