OB - Willis E. Anderson
The Rev. Willis E. Anderson, 77, of Spencer died April 26, 2011. Graveside service will be 1 p.m., Monday, May 2, in Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer. There will be no visitation. John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
****Another newspaper reports that he died at Roane General Hospital in Spencer and that the graveside service will include military honors.

Reverend Anderson was the son of the late James and Victoria Griffin Anderson & was also preceded in death by his wife, Stella Tanner Anderson, in 2010. They were married in Roane County in 1953 and were parents of five children.
Rev. and Mrs. Anderson were long-time members of the Roane County Historical Society., Inc.

News : Notes from March 24, 2011 Meeting

The Roane County Historical Society, Inc. met on Thursday, March 24, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the Roane County Library for its regular monthly meeting. Ten members and three guests were present. The R.C.H.S. did not meet in December 2010 due bad weather and the society does not regularly meet in January-February.

The meeting was called to order by Rick Greathouse, President. Linda Liss led the opening prayer and the pledge to the American flag was recited. The November 2010 meeting notes, as posted on this website, were read by, Susan Tucker, Recording Secretary.

Carol Board-Westfall, Treasurer, gave the treasurer's report which reflected a $5,000 anonymous donation to the society.

Linda Liss, Membership & Corresponding Secretary reported current membership at 195. She has sent greeting cards were needed and responded to various other inquiries.

Susan Tucker reported that she has done an inventory of publications available through the R.C.H.S. The publications list is available on this website.

The 17th Annual Genealogical Fair sponsored by the R.C.H.S. will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Heritage Park Community Building, Spencer, WV.

As an informative introduction of the guests, each person present reported on the family lines they are researching, told a bit about themselves and/or told how they got started with family genealogy.

Old Business: Carol Board-Westfall reported on the 2010-11 plaque project. Plaques for fifteen historic churches and one house were ordered and have been received. She also reported that she has been collecting information needed to proceed with the proposed plaque to honor the former WV Congressman Harry Chapman Woodyard who was from Roane County.

Linda Liss reported on the 1st Annual Essay Scholarship. The guidelines and applications were distributed to interested Roane County High School seniors on January 18th. The $500 scholarship winner will be announced at the school's annual award ceremony in May.

New Business: Susan Tucker, Carol Board-Westfall and Susie Wyatt worked during the Winter break to clean-up and rearrange the society's library located on the lower level of the Roane County Public Library. Additional shelving, a new file cabinet, storage containers and other items were purchased to make that rearrangement possible.
While rearranging the library several folders of obituaries were found. Patty Wyatt is sorting and putting the obituaries into a usable format. They will remain a part of the library's extensive obituary collection. Additional work days in the library will be scheduled as needed.

The next scheduled meeting of the R.C.H.S. will be held on Thursday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Roane County Public Library. Members are urged to attend and guests are always welcomed.

General Interest : Ongoing Plaque Project

In 2009 the Roane County Historical Society, Inc. took on an ongoing project to commemorate and recognize pre-1910 (100 year old) buildings and homes in Spencer, Roane Co., WV. To that end eighteen buildings and homes have been recognized and bronze plaques have been installed identifying their place in Spencer's history. A walking tour brochure has been prepared to aid those wishing to see the structures first-hand.

Obituaries : OB - Vivian L. Heikkinen

Funeral Services for Vivian L. Heikkinen, age 87, of Painesville, will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Eagle St., Fairport Harbor.
Vivian passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, in Cleveland at the Hospice House of the Western Reserve.
She was Born Feb. 8, 1923, in Peninsula to Laura (Helper) and Lafie Gustafson.
She was a teacher for Painesville Township School System. She taught at Melridge and Grand River Elementary.
Vivian was a graduate from Bowling Green State University and earned her master's degree in education from Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania. Vivian was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was the historian and program chairperson of the Finnish Heritage Museum in Fairport Harbor. She was a member of the Vasa Club, Miscellany Club, Lake County Teachers Association, D.A.R., Colonial Dames and Lake County Genealogical Society.
She is survived by her son, Douglas (Debra Woodruff-Capper) Heikkinen of Philadelphia; daughters, Laura (Veikko) Malkamaki of Concord and Bonnie (Dave) McLeod of Newark, Ohio; grandchildren, Daniel Malkamaki of Concord and Dennis Malkamaki of Painesville and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Heikkinen and brothers, Raymond and Dale Hall.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Potti Funeral Home, 1009 Mentor Ave., Painesville, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Peninsula.
The family suggest contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve or Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Eagle St., Fairport Harbor.
