1. ALVA L.3 LAUGHLIN (JAMES2, JAMES1) was born 1830 in Pennsylvania, and died July 01, 1863 in Pocahontas Co.. West Virginia. Place of burial unknown. . He married (1) NANCY CONNOLLY March 07, 1850 in Gilmer Co., (West) Virginia. She was born 1833, and died Unknown. He married (2) DIANA A. BRANNON May 25, 1853 in Gilmer Co., (W) Virginia, daughter of WILLIAM BRANNON and MARY PAINE. She was born 1825 in Kanawha Co., (W) Virginia, and died December 1891 in Calhoun Co. West Virginia-Buried- Road Run Cemetery, Calhoun Co. WV.

From " Calhoun County West Virginia History 1989" (Pg. 123)

Alva Laughlin was a Union soldier in Co. G. 9th Infantry Regiment. Alva was captured near Arnoldsburg by Confederate troops, and executed while being held captive. The exact location of his death and place of burial remain a mystery. The only memento of Alva's service and death is a Civil War medal which the family obtained from the W.VA. archives in 1985. It is said that Alva's vest was returned to his wife with a bullet hole in it. Thomas (Alva's son) was 8 years old at the time of his father's death. At one point Thomas attempted to conceal a sack of corn from Confederate troops by sitting on it. The Confederates realized he was concealing something from them and seized him and punished him harshly, which he never forgot.

More About ALVA L. LAUGHLIN:

Military service: Civil War-Private, Company G, 9th West Virginia Infantry. Enlisted March 1, 1862, severely wounded May 22, 1863, was prisoner of war, Union.

More About DIANA BRANNON:

Diana spent many years trying to collect her husband's military pension. In the pension applications she filed, many of the Brannon family signed statements swearing to the birth of her and Alva's children. The year of their marriage and birth dates of their children do not agree with the pension records. It is my belief that Diana could not read or write, and sometimes got confused about the years. It took her many years to receive any money from his pension and many of her children were almost grown by this time.
