Families : Hopkins Family of Harper District

Robert Hopkins and his wife, Martha A. (Stalnaker) Hopkins, were the first of this name to settle in this district. Robert was born in Pendleton County, western Virginia, 23 December 1822, son of Lawrence B. and Mary (Jordan) Hopkins. Lawrence B. Hopkins was born in Rhode Island in 1760 and was a soldier of the Continental Army of the Revolution. Mary Jordan was a daughter of Captain William Jordan of the Continental Army who lived in Pendleton County when Mary, the mother of Robert Hopkins, was born in 1794. Martha's parents were John and Susannah (Chenoweth) Stalnaker, who came from Randolph Co., WV and settled early near Reedy, Roane County, WV.






Robert and Martha were married 19 June 1851 in Wirt County and to them were born the following named children: Melissa J. 20 Jun 1852, Minerva S. 23 Jan 1854, Marshall A.C. 09 Apr 1856, John L. 15 Apr 1858, Mary S.M. 14 Mar 1860, A.J.Floyd 17 Jul 1862, Martha E.N. 07 Aug 1864, James O. 24 Jul 1867.

Martha A. was born 01 Feb 1834 in Beverly, Randolph County, VA and died in Harper District at Cox's Fork on 15 Sep 1870. Robert married for his second wife Mary J. Cleek, daughter of George and Bridgett (King) Cleek, in Jackson County on 24 Sep 1871. To Robert and Mary J. were born four children: Bridgett A. 11 Oct 1872, George Frederick 05 Jul 1874, Margaret E. 21 Jul 1876, and Zuba M. 14 Nov 1878.

Robert was appointed and served as postmaster at Flat Fork commencing in 1871.
