General Interest : Minutes from May 28, 2015 Meeting

The Roane County Historical Society, Inc. met on Thursday May 28, 2015 for their regular meeting, 7:00 p.m. at the Roane County Library in Spencer. President, Rick Greathouse, called the meeting to order. Carol Board-Westfall led an opening prayer and the pledge to the flag was recited by all.

Treasurer’s Report: Carol Board Westfall – Balance $12,872.57

Correspondence: Reported by Linda Liss
1. Responded to inquiry about Cricket Grist Mill – Mill actually in Roane Co., TN
2. From John F. Failla, of Cumming, GA, regarding 20”x30” map drawn on “cloth” showing various family names and streams in Roane County. For sale. Good condition. Contact if interested. Linda is to respond to offer, get price. Where would we display & preserve “cloth” map if we chose to purchase it? Note: We have paper plot maps already available to the RCHS.
3. Bob Weaver, Hur Herald, looking for information on the R.S. & G Rr for an article he is working on.
4. Sent 9 new member welcome/packet letters in April & May.
5. No get-well or sympathy cards sent April-May.

Membership: Linda reported the current membership: 202

Linda reminded members that fiscal year 2015-16 dues are payable now. July 1 starts a new fiscal year for the society.

April Book purchases: Scout of the Monongahela: The Tale of Jesse Hughes by David Begler.

2015 Genealogy Fair, Saturday, Sept. 26th at the Heritage Park Community Bldg. in Spencer. Melissa Swisher reported that she will be contacting vendors soon. The Auxiliary will have their usual concessions for the Fair.

Newsletter: Linda Cottrell Liss reported that she has completed her part the Summer 2015 newsletter and has forwarded all the articles [May 22] to Carol Cronin to convert to PDF files to send to the printer. Should be ready to mail in early June. Melissa Swisher, who puts the mailing labels on the newsletter and takes to P.O. reported that the bulk postage rate has gone up slightly.

Linda Liss commented on the 2015 Essay Scholarship – No Senior student at Roane County High School turned in an essay, even though some had picked up applications. Society wants to make the $1,000 scholarship available to homeschoolers, Christian schools, etc. as well as the high school seniors.

Rick announced that a Nominating Committee needs to be formed to nominate Society officers for the fiscal year 2015-16. Committee will be selected in June 2015 to report nominations at July 2015 meeting.

Phyllis Jarvis announced that she is working on her gt. gt. grandmother’s family line: Nancy Williamson who married Abraham Young. She is making an article available for a future newsletter.

The next meeting of the Roane Co. Historical Society is June 25th. Rick will be working to schedule a program for that meeting. He suggests inviting Mr. Craig Hesson, who is involved with battle re-enactments at Ft. Randolph in Pt. Pleasant, Mason Co., WV. Rick will let us know in advance if he can schedule Mr. Hesson for the June or July meeting.

Theresa Boggs Parker announced that June 5-6, 2015 is Roane County “Heritage Days.” The Rr. Depot Museum will be open, live music, exhibits, demonstrations and food will be available.

Also, June is the Society’s Birthday month. Cake & Ice cream will be served.
