General Interest : June 23, 2011 RCHS Meeting Notes

The Roane County Historical Society met on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Roane County Library with eighteen members and guests present.
Rick Greathouse, President, called the meeting to order and welcomed those present. Anthony Hofstad led the opening prayer and the pledge to the American flag was recited. The minutes from the May meeting were approved as read.

The treasurer\'s report shows a balance of $19,450.83

Membership Secretary/Corresponding Sect\'y, Linda Liss, reported the current membership at 200 which includes two new members. No new correspondence except she had contacted 29 local members about the June meeting.

Volume 18-4 of \"The Journal\" newsletter is about ready to send to the printer.

Old Business:

Johanna Nutter, Genealogy Fair Chairperson, reported that the 17th Annual Genealogy Fair is scheduled for September 24th at the Heritage Park Community Bldg in Spencer, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. She will have more to report as vendors are firmed up.

Linda Liss reported that she has written the land owner on whose property the Civil War tombstone for T.J. Cottrill was found; no response as of this date.

Carol Board-Westfall reported that she had attended the County Commission meeting on Tuesday, June 14th. They gave permission for a plaque commemorating the Congressional service of Harry Chapman Woodyard, Roane County\'s only Congressman, to be placed in the lobby of the court house. She will proceed with designing and ordering the plaque which will be 18\" x 24\" and contain a likeness of Mr. Woodyard. [Note: A very interesting, full-page plus, article \"From Spencer to the Capitol\" about Congressman Woodward & the plaque project appeared in Thurs., June 30th\'s Times Record newspaper.]

New Business:

Mr. Jerry R. Morgan, guest of member Mrs. Phyllis Counts, was in Roane County researching the old Alpheus Family cementery on Mulberry Ridge of Triplett Rd. in Roane County. The Alpheus family was the only Black family known to live in Roane County in the 1870\'s era. Family head Sgt. Henry Alpheus served the Union Army, 97th US Co B - Colored Troop during the Civil War. Mr. Morgan shared photos he had taken of the cemetery. [Note: A transcription of the Alpheus Cemetery may be found in Vol.V - Cemeteries of Roane County published by the R.C.H.S.]

Nominating Committee: Linda Liss, Anthony Hofstad and Johanna Nutter to nominate officers for the 2011-12 fiscal year, to report slate of officers at July meeting.

Our special guest and recipient of the 2011 Annual Essay Scholarship was Miss Shelby A. Montgomery. Shelby told us about herself and her Montgomery ancestors. She plans to attend Glenville State College in the Fall majoring in Elementary Education. She has been added as a honorary member of R.C.H.S. Linda Liss presented Shelby with a certificate recognizing her as the $500 scholarship recipient.



Rick reported that he is scheduling a speaker from \"Preservation Works\" of the State Historic Preservation Office in Charleston for our July meeting. This is about preserving and restoring cemeteries.

The meeting adjourned with cake & ice cream being served by Johanna Nutter.

The next regularly schelduled meeting is Thursday, July 28th at 7:00 p.m. Members are urged to attend and guests are always welcome.
