Obituaries : William Henry Hess

W. H. Hess

William Henry Hess, proprietor of the Spencer Hotel died very suddenly Saturday night from heart failure. He was about 65 years of age and was born in Gilmer County and moved to Raone County more than 20 years ago locating at Seaman later moving to Hammack where he was employed for several years by an oil company. He took charge of the Spencer Hotel several months ago renting the same from D. W. and H. C. Law of Reedy. Mr. Hess was twice married, his first wife was Miss Jennie Smith. Three children were born to this union, Claude who lives at Clendenin ; Miss Maple who resides at Pittsburgh and Clyde who died when a small child. After the death of Mrs. Hess he was married to Miss Ethel Warren, a daughter of the late Rev. D. B. Warren of Liverpool. Two children, Cleophas and Charles were born to this union, who with their mother survives.

The deceased is also survived by one brother, Wesley Hess of Duke Station. A brother, Alonza Hess, and two sisters, Mrs. Julia Taylor and Mrs. Mary Kershner have passed to the great beyond. there are also five surviving grandchildren.

Mr. Hess was a member of the M. E. Church South at Duke for many years. He was at one time a member of he Reedy Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Millard Masonic Lodge of Reedy, who have charge of the funeral. Funeral sermon preached by Rev. D. H. Anderson, assisted by Revs. Crumpler, Kelly,, and Rev, J. H. Keffer of Seaman and interment in the Seaman cemetery near Reedy.
