Re: Griffith Esso Station - Roane County, WV
FROM SUE HOLLAND MILLER:

THIS IS IN THE LATE 1930'S.. THE LITTLE STATION AND STORE WAS OWNED BY ROY AND RUBY GRIFFITH. MAXWELL HOLLAND (MY DAD) WORKED FOR THEM IN THE GARAGE AS A MECHANIC. RUBY'S YOUNGER SISTER, JUSTINE (MY MOTHER) WOULD VISIT THEM. SO MY PARENTS MET THERE. LATER DADDY WOULD GO TO WHERE MOTHER WENT TO CHURCH TO GIVE HER A RIDE HOME.

LATER THE BUSINESS WAS OWNED BY DATE GRIFFITH (ROY'S BROTHER) DATE AND HIS WIFE JEANETTE AND THEIR DAUGHTER PAT LIVED THERE FOR SEVERAL YEARS.

Re: Griffith Esso Station - Roane County, WV - CORRECTION
I don't know any of the details of when or how it changed hands, but in the late 40s and early 50s, the store and station was run by George Griffith (my grandfather, who was another brother of Roy and Dayt) and his wife Bess (Wright). This was just before my time, so I don't remember it -- I just remember it being talked about, in terms of "back when they had the store." I do seem to recall hearing that Dayt was still involved with it at the same time.

CORRECTION TO THE ABOVE: My mistake -- I have been informed that there were two Griffith Esso stations in Roane County at the time. This one was not the one owned by George Griffith; it was (as the previous post says) owned by his brother Dayton.

Sorry for the confusion. I must remember the first commandment of historical research: "Thou shalt not jump to conclusions."
