We offer our congratulations to Caron Cronin for receiving the West Virginia History Hero award for her outstanding efforts to preserve the history of the people of Roane County through pictures.

Carol, a Spencer resident, works part-time for WVU through the HSTA program and also does seasonal accounting work. She is an active participant in many projects relating to preservation of Roane County history.

I'm trying to help a friend find information on Wiley Horner who married Sabra Naylor in 1865 in Roane county. Sabra or TherSabra was the daughter of John Young Naylor and Labana Helmick. We believe Wiley was born abt 1843 and according to the census in Virginia. This is all we know about him. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Something else... On the 1860 Meigs County Ohio census there is a Wm. W. Horner 16yrs born in Va. living with Silas and Nancy Drake, Clarissa, Adaline, Sheldon H, Skelton A, and John W. I feel that this could be Wiley Horner. Could he have come to Roane county with the Drakes? If so what is their connection.........

I am looking for information about the parents of John Thompson born in about 1826 in Wythe? County, VA. John was married to Nancy Jane Alvis. They lived in Walton District.

Greenberry Fisher died at Goldtown in Jackson County in 1901; the death record can be found here. His wife at that time was named Sarah.

The record of his first marriage -- also in Jackson County, recorded as "Greenbury" Fisher to "Juliet" Koontz -- can be seen here.

Do you have record of Greenberry Fisher, born in Roane Co. in 1822, Father William Fisher. Greenberry married Juliette Koontz. The family then moved on.

William Rush Goff, 1813-1892. Moved to Roane County in 1837. Settled on Spring Creek. 1888 sold 118 acres of land which became Spencer State Hospital. He was also instrumental in forming the first bank in Spencer, The Bank of Spencer, 1891. For 13 years he was Justice of Peace; 5 in Jackson County, 3 in Wirt County, and 5 in Roane County, without even changing his address.

My Great grandmother's name was Bertha Black Batten. Do not know what the generation prior was surnamed, but do know that she was Cherokee...
