| 16 | He moved with his family to Augusta County VA in 1762 and to Greenbrier County VA (WV) in 1771. In 1774, Charles served nine months in the VA Militia in the Point Pleasant, VA area and he and four brothers were in the battle of Point Pleasant. On March 1, 1776, Charles volunteered as a scout and Indian spy for a 12 month tour with Captain Matthew Arbuckle. He was stationed at Point Pleasant and was discharged there after his tour ended. On May 1, 1777, he volunteered for a second 12 month tour and was under the command of Captain Zera Coombs. He was discharged at the end of this second tour. They lived first in Greenbrier County and then in that part of Kanawha County VA that eventually became Braxton County WV. On October 4, 1833, Charles appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Nicholas County VA (WV) and gave a declaration in order to obtain a pension as a veteran of the Revolution. He was refused because his claim was drawn by pension speculator W.G. Singleton and service was not proved. (American Revolutionary War Rejected Pensions index shows Name: Francis Boggs, State: Virginia, Location: --, Nicholas, Reason: Independent contemporary evidence adverse to his claim.) Margaret Ann Ball notes that he appears to have at one time owned land on Shit Creek, referenced in Braxton Co. Deeds, Book 1, p. 120, where his heirs sold land to Jones Friend. Margaret is also convinced that the name was Francis Charles, and that he usually went by his middle name, a not uncommon practice among Boggs men. This would match in part census records for Francis Boggs of 1810 in Kanawha, VA and 1820 and 1830 in Nicholas, VA, likely the same place considering county formations, which ultimately became Braxton county. | Charles Francis Boggs

| 34 | Charles was born in Londonderry, Ireland, in 1774 and according to one source, came to America as a stowaway in a hogshead on a freighter, landing on the coast of Virginia about 1796. Some family records indicate that Charles had two sisters, Margaret who married a Mr. Moore and Ellen who married a Mr. Freel. There is no evidence that either sister came to America. But another source states that Charles had three brothers that came to America with him with one of them settling in Gassaway, Braxton County, West Virginia. The names of their parents are unknown at this time. But according to family history, the family had a linen factory in Londonderry, but Charles, a Protestant, left Ireland to escape Catholic persecution. Records show Charles living in Ruddle, Randolph County, Virginia, in 1796 and in the same year he was married to Hannah Skidmore in Pendleton County, Virginia (now W.Va.) by a minister named Morton. Hannah was the daughter of John and Mary Magdalene Hinkle Skidmore, this union providing one of the several links between the Rogers, Skidmore and Friend families. Hannah was born in Augusta County, Va., in 1776 and her father John was a Revolutionary War Captain. Charles apparently was a colorful character: Clayburn Pierson, a contemporary of Charles in his younger days (Pierson's), writes of him and calls him "Uncle Charlie," a God-fearing man and tells that he spoke with a heavy brogue. Charles reportedly was a wandering peddler when he married Hannah. Charles and Hannah settled on a farm for fourteen years in the Shenandoah Valley and had five children there: John born in 1796, Margaret born in 1799, Levi born in 1803, Noah born in 1806 and Elijah born in 1809. James A. was born in 1820 after the family had moved to Braxton County, Va., (Now W.Va.). Charles, while living in the Shenandoah Valley apparently was jailed after posting bond for a scoundrel who left town, and was helped from the jail by Hannah; they left for the mouth of Otter in Braxton County on horseback, leaving word that they could be found there. In 1831, Charles and Hannah migrated to what is now Wallback in Clay County, West Virginia. At the time, the Wallback area was a complete wilderness. Charles built a pioneer house from Buckeye trees and he and Hannah spent the rest of their lives there farming, planting apple orchards and raising mulberries. Both are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery located at Wallback. Hannah died in 1847 and Charles died in 1849. -- from The Rogers Family of Clay County by Arthur R. Friend | Charles Rogers

Sutton he paid for by splitting and building a rail fence around the bottom of what is now the town of Sutton. It is said he was a man of extra ordinary strength and endurance and weighed 180 lbs. The tale is told of how he killed a yearling bear on Wolf Creek and carried it 7 miles home on his shoulders, along with his gun and knapsack, pausing only twice to rest. Andrew is buried in the Beall Cemetery, located between Sutton and Gasaway, Braxton Co., WV., where he is buried with several of his descendants. | Andrew Skidmore
