Mrs. Henrietta Burgess (Young) Chapman, daughter of B. Strawther and Lucinda (Huffman) Young, was born in Kanawha county, then Virginia, June the 17th, 1850, departed this life Monday, Sept. 14th, 1925, age 75 years, 2 month and 26 days. At the age of 3 years, Aunt Ret, as she was commonly known by her neighbors, with her father, mother and one brother, came to Roane County to make their future home and settled on Flat Run near Linden, where she remained until the Reaper whose name is Death, called her to join father, mother, and brother who had proceeded her to the Great Beyond years before. At an early age Aunt Ret was converted and joined the Hayes Fork A. C. Church of which she remained a member. She had been in very poor health for several years and death had been expected for some time. Nevertheless she is missed. In the year of 1866 she was united in marriage to Salvanis Gideon Chapman to this union eleven children were born all of which are still living except one. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon the 18th by Rev. Herbert Spencer at the home of the daughters, Mrs. Samples. All of the children were present except Mrs. Goodwin, who was unable to attend. Aunt Ret was laid to rest in the Chapman cemetery by the side of her husband, who proceeded her in death 40 years ago. When the last feeble step has been taken. And the gates of that City appear. And the beautiful song of the Angels. Float out on my listening Ear. When all that now seems so mysterious. Will be bright and clear day And the falls of the road will seem nothing. When we get to the end of the way. (Submitted by Evelyn Bissell Starcher)
