HUGH INGRAM DIES FEB. 25

Funeral services were held from the First M. E. Church Thursday afternoon for Hugh Ingram, aged 89 years, who died Tuesday evening, Feb. 25, 1930 at his home on Tanner Run, following an illness of several months duration. The service was preached by the Rev. W. Casto assisted by the Rev. Dan Anderson and the Rev. G. W. Webb. Interment was made in the Simmons addition of the Spencer Cemetery.

Mr. Ingram is survived by the widow, Emily Board Ingram and eight children: John, Spencer; Irvin of near Elizabeth; Arthur of Charleston; Mrs. C. J. Kelly, Spencer; Mrs. Florence Radabaugh, Curtis District; Holly of Spencer; and William of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Ingram was a pioneer of Roane County, being born here Jan. 30, 1848, the son of John and Emily Hardman Ingram.

Obituaries : Jacob Argabrite, Esq

Jacob Argabrite, Esq., one of the old veterans of the Civil War, died at his home, about one mile east of Spencer, on Wednesday, 14 July, 1909, of heart trouble. He had been troubled more or less with affectation of the heart for several years, but was taken suddenly ill with more deep-seated trouble on the Saturday preceding his death. He was born 8 March 1842, enlisted in the Union Army 19 Feb 1861, and served until the close of the war. April 5, 1866 he was married to Miss Alice Ingram and to this union were born seven children, one of whom preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday, conducted by Rev. Adkins, after which the remains were buried in the burying grounds near where he lived. He was one of Roane's old and esteemed citizens. His old comrades acted as pall-bearers. The old soldier boys are fastly passing away. He leaves a widow and six children.

AGED SPENCER WOMAN ANSWERS LAST CALL

Mrs. Alice Argabrite Passes Away last Monday Morning

Mrs. Alice G. Argabrite, aged 72 years, one of the best known and most highly respected of the older residents of this city,succumbed to an attack of heart failure at the home of her son, Fleet Argabrite, last Monday. Mrs. Argabrite had been in poor health for some time, but her demise was a severe shock to her family and friends.

She was born in this county October 8th, 1850, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ingram, and had lived in Roane County all her life. Converted at an early age, Mrs. Argabrite was a life-long consistent and exemplary member of the M. E. Church.

Possessed of a strikingly sweet and amiable disposition, the deceased drew unto herself the affection and admiration of all who were so fortunate as to know her, and her passing has brought forth many tributes of esteem, indicating the large place she occupied in the lives of those who best knew her.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Emma Thompson and Mrs. Ida Hunt of this city; four sons, Dr. B. G. Argabrite of Depoy, KY, Homer Argabrite of Dunbar, WV, M. F. and F. W. Argabrite of Spencer; and a number of grand children and great-grand children, nearly all of whom attended the funeral service conducted at the home Tuesday, conducted by Rev. W. K. Doutt, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Argabrite Cemetery on lower Spring Creek.

CURTIS FUNERAL SERVICES HELD HERE ON MAY 8

Succumbs Sunday Morning to Illness of Several Months

Rev. H. B. Workman, Pastor First M. E. Church, Delivers Beautiful Sermon. The death angel visited Spencer Sunday morning and took from the community one of its most respected and beloved citizens in the person of Nathan Curtis. Mr. Curtis had been in ill health for several months and while this was generally known, it was not realized his condition was so serious, the news of his death coming as a shock to the entire community.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home on Chapman Avenue in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing friends and relatives, after which the remains were laid to rest in the mausoleum.

The services were conducted by the Rev. H. B. Workman, pastor of the Spencer Methodist Episcopal Church of which Mr. Curtis was an attendant, who paid a beautiful tribute to the life and character of the deceased.

Mr. Curtis, son of W. W. and Rebecca Wetzel Curtis, was born near Reedyville, June 7, 1858, being nearly 70 years of age at the time of this death. On November 14, 1878, he was married to Samantha E. Lucas to which union one son, L. O. Curtis, was born. Mrs. Curtis died May 16, 1885 and on February 14, 1905, Mr. Curtis was married to Mina M. Chapman, who together with a step-daughter, Lenna Chapman and his son, L. O. Curtis, survive.

Mr. Curtis spent all of his life in Roane County, the last twenty-four years of it in Spencer where he was employed at the Spencer State Hospital until the condition of his health because such it was necessary to give up active work. Besides the above named relatives, there survive him one brother, Rev. A. J. L. Curtis of Barrickville; a sister, Mrs. Rulina Hardman of Akron, Ohio; two half-sisters, Mrs. Nora O. Sleeth of Clifton, and Mrs. Sophronia W. Wilt of Cowen; and one half-brother, P.H.S. Riddle of Clarence. Those of his brothers and sisters who have passed are Mrs. Martha Starcher, Frances Marion Curtis, Rev. Albert L. Curtis and William S. Curtis.

Former Resident of This County Passes Away at Home in Parkersburg

William S. Curtis answered the last at his home in Parkersburg last Friday, November 26, 1915, at the age of 51 years. He was afflicted with tuberculosis and had been in declining health for many months before the end came. Mr. Curtis was born in Roane County, June 30, 1864, and moved to Parkersburg twenty-seven years ago. The deceased was the son of Capt. William and Rebecca Curtis, both of whom have passed to the other shore. Capt. Curtis was killed in the battle at New Creek Station, W. Va. now Keyser, when Willliam S., his youngest child, was but one month old. The son never saw his father. He is survived by Nathan Curtis of Spencer; and Rev. A. J. L. Curis of Barrickville, WV, brothers; and Mrs. Rulina Hardman of this city, a sister. His mother married again and P. H. S. Riddle of Curtis District, a half-brother, and Mrs. Thomas Sleeth of Looneyville and Mrs. Sophronia Wilt of Webster County, half-sisters, survive. The deceased was united in marriage while yet a resident of this county to a Miss (Hannah) Noffsinger. She passed away several years ago. The following children survive this union: Logan, Ellsworth and Mervin, sons; Miss Belva and Mrs. H. D. Stewart, daughters, all of Parkersburg. He was again married to Miss Florence Starcher, a Roane County girl of Zona, who died about two years ago.

Mr. Curtis was a hard-working, but upright and fearless man. He maintained a reputation for sobriety and honesty and was a faithful member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church. The remains were laid to rest in the Dills Cemetery on Sunday. Funeral services were held at the U.B. Church by Rev. Fred Slaughter.
