General Interest : 5th Annual Essay Scholarship

REMINDER - ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE TO ROANE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Roane County Historical Society, Inc. reminds interested students and parents of the availability of a $1,000 scholarship to a 2014-15 full-time student at Roane County High School, Spencer, WV.

In order to promote Roane County history and family genealogy the society is encouraging young citizens to write an essay on their family history. The essay must be genealogical in nature and may include family migration patterns on their way to settling in Roane County. The essay best meeting the guidelines will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship. This is the 5th year the society has made the scholarship available to Roane County High seniors.

Applications and guidelines are available through the Guidance Counselor at Roane County High School and must be completed and returned to the Counselor by Friday, April 10, 2015. Announcement & presentation of winning essay scholarship coincides with the school’s May 2015 Awards Ceremony.

News : Notes from RCHS December 18, 2014 Meeting

The Roane County Historical Society met for their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Roane County library. Rick Greathouse, President, called the meeting to order, led an opening prayer and the Pledge to the flag was recited by all. (Ten members present).
In the absence of the Recording Secretary, the minutes from the November 20, 2014 meeting were read by Linda Liss. With a few minor notations to minutes, Patty Wyatt made motion to approve the minutes which were approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report by Carol Board-Westfall. Ending Balance: $13,700.67

Membership Secretary: Linda Liss reported membership at 206. There are still 18 members who have not paid their 2014-15 dues. All have been contacted at least two times and will be removed from the roll.
Correspondence: Linda reported that she had received a research paper titled, “History of the Lynch Homestead Property” prepared by society member, Jim Ranson. He also included some family group sheets for the John Looney [1814-1889] descendants. Mr. Ranson’s mother descends from the Looney line through the Lynch line.
Linda also reported that she had sent get-well cards to members: Peggy Starcher and Carol Cronin.

E-mail correspondence to Rick Greathouse from society member John Sagart. Mr. Sagart is looking for information on Andrew Taylor Nichols, son of Robert Nichols and Margaret Schoolcraft. They are buried at a Nichols Cemetery on the Richard Greathouse farm in presumably the Smithfield Dist. of Roane County.

2015 Genealogy Fair: On calendar for Saturday, September 26 at the Heritage Park Community Bldg.

Old Business: Linda reported that she is still working on the Spencer State Hospital Album project. She has identified over 5,200 persons who were patients at the institution, recorded the 1900-1940 census’s to include in the project and has collected several pictures of the building. Still needs input from former employees, etc. who have first-hand experience of the hospital. The album will be donated to the Roane County Historical Society when completed.

5th Annual Essay Scholarship: Guidelines & Application forms have been sent to Roane County High School counselors. Forms will be available for distribution during the month of January 2015 & the essay deadline is April 10, 2015.

Rick reported that Elaine Gates, associated with the Archives & History Library in Charleston, is still working on scanning [1900-1950] obituaries and Roane County related newspaper articles for donation to the R.C.H. Society.

2015 History Hero: R.C.H.S. Nominee, Melissa Swisher, is completing needed application papers. The West Virginia Division of Culture & History “History Heroes” will be announced in January & recognized at a February session of the WV Legislature.

New Business:
Resignation of Newsletter Editor – Email dated Tuesday, December 09, 2014
“This notice is to serve as official notification of my resignation as editor of the Roane County Historical Society’s newsletter, The Journal, effective immediately. This was not an easy decision for me to make………
Between my own health issues and those of my extended family member, I have neither the time nor the energy to do the research necessary to find and make articles for the Journal interesting enough for publication. Thank you all for the opportunity to have been the Journal editor for the past twelve years. Sincerely, Carol Cronin”

Where do we go from here with regard to “The Journal” newsletter? Discussion continued as how to prepare and go forward with the Winter issue. The Executive Committee will meet in January 2015 to discuss the future of “The Journal” newsletter.

Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. with refreshments being served to Carol Board Westfall, Linda Liss, Rick Greathouse, Patty and Bernard Wyatt, Melissa Swisher, Reva Paxton, Carl Paxton and new members: Luther and Phyllis Jarvis.

We do not meet during the months of January & February. The next regular meeting of the Society will be Thursday, March 26, 2015.

General Interest : December Society Meeting to be held one Week Earlier

Due to the Christmas Holiday, the December Meeting of the Roane County Historical Society will be held one week earlier. DECEMBER 18, 2014 AT 7:00 P.M. at the Roane County Library in Spencer. Mark your calendars & plan to attend. Refreshments will be served. This will be our last meeting for 2014. We do not meet during the months of January & February. The first meeting of 2015 will be March 26th. Hope to see you on the 18th................

General Interest : November Society Meeting to be Held One Week Earlier

The Roane County Historical Society, Inc. met at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Roane County Library for their regular monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by President, Rick Greathouse, an opening prayer was led by Carol Board-Westfall and the pledge to the flag was recited by all.
Minutes from the September 2014 meeting were read by the Recording Secretary, Susan Tucker and approved as read.
Treasurer, Carol Board-Westfall, reported all bills were paid, leaving a balance of $13,883.09. The main expenditure was new shelving additions for the society’s genealogy library.
Corresponding & Membership Secretary, Linda Cottrell Liss, reported that cards had been sent where needed and that the membership now stands at 207. That total includes five new members received during the recent genealogy fair.
We note that the Fall – Vol. 22, Issue One of “The Journal” newsletter of the Society is delayed due a recent surgery and recuperation of our Editor Carol Cronin. The newsletter will be completed and mailed to you soon.
Other Reports & Business:
Carol reported that the 20th Annual Roane County Genealogy Fair on September 27th was well-attended, that everything went smoothly, fair-goers enjoyed the fellowship and maybe found new family connections, and new members were received. Next year’s 21st Annual Roane County Genealogy is scheduled for Saturday, September 26th. Put that on your calendar now!
Interviews for the “Journey into the Wild and Wonderful” county documentary videos are scheduled for October and November. Mr. Wayne Worth of Clarksburg, West Virginia is making documentary history CD’s of each county in West Virginia. When the project is completed those recordings will be made available and donated to each 8th Grade teacher for use in their West Virginia History studies. Roane County’s first interview was with Roane County historian, Mr. Denver Gandee. Other interviews are scheduled with persons knowledgeable of specific areas of Roane County history.
The Roane County Historical Society is happy to announce that it will continue to present a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving Senior student at Roane County High School. The application and guidelines for the 5th Annual Essay Scholarship will be available soon with the school’s guidance counselor.
Lastly, the Society has voted to make their genealogy library located on the lower level of the Roane County Library open during the Roane County Farmer’s Market Winter Hours days. Schedule: 2nd Fri of November, 2 & 3rd Fri. of December 2014 and 2nd Fri. of Jan., Feb. Mar. & Apr. 2015. The Winter Farmer’s Market will also be held on the lower level of the library.
Mark your calendars, the November meeting of the Roane County Historical Society will be held one week earlier due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thursday, November 20th will be an important meeting since society business is winding up for the year. Members are urged to attend and as always guests are welcome.

Just a few lines to remind members and other interested persons that the next meeting of the Roane County Historical Society will be held on Thursday, October 23rd at 7 p.m. at the Roane County Library in Spencer. Members are urged to attend and guests are always welcome.

We are excited to announce that Roane County will be video film documented in Wayne Worth's "Journey Into the Wild & Wonderful" county film series. He is film documenting each West Virginia county to be used in 8th Grade West Virginia classrooms. An interview with county historian, Mr. Denver Gandee, has already been done & other interviews are scheduled to cover different aspects of Roane County history.

On another item of business: The Society voted unanimously to continue the Annual Essay Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Roane County High School Seniors are invited to write an essay telling their family history. Guidelines and applications will be available soon with school guidance counselors.
