The County of Roane was erected on the 11th day of March, 1856, from parts of Jackson, Gilmer and Kanawha Counties. The original post office of Newton was established in Kanawha County on February 26, 1857. The location was in the residence of Rev. Davidson W. Ross, justice of the peace at the mouth of Dog Creek, who had suggested the name for his son, Isaac Newton, who was two years old. It was later moved to the "three forks of Sandy" where it has remained as the center of the town of Newton.

Poppy Ogden (Robert Kellis) sitting on the ground, Betty Sue Hildreth, Jo Ann Hildreth, Linda Marie Hickel, & I think the other little girl is Rita Sue Ross.  Aunt Ruth Hildreth is sitting in the chair. I don't know who the man is in the other chair, perhaps Edison or Forest Ross.
