| Ephraim Hess family

This is a picture of Capt. Ephraim Hess and wife Sophronia (Murphy) Hess and family. Ephraim was the son of Hiram Hess and Mary (Fitzwater) Hess, the first of their family to settle in Roane County about 1852. They made their home on the head waters of Poca in what is now Smithfield District. Hiram was a stone mason contractor who built the stone work of the Gauley bridge that was soon destroyed in the Civil War. Ephraim was born about 1850 and was a soldier of the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. He also served in the war against the Indians known as the Nezperce War. He and Sophronia were married in Spencer on March 25, 1890 and later moved west. They are both buried at Smithville, Clay Co., MO. Sophronia was my grandfather's sister, a daughter of Peter and Lucretia (Rollins) Murphy.

Samuel B. Wright was born 16 Oct 1818 in Nelson County, Virginia, a son of Benjamin and Jane (Borden) Wright. He came to the Big Sandy area of Roane County (then Kanawha County, VA) some time in the early 1840's. He was married in Kanawha County, VA (Roane Co., WV) on 17 Nov 1851 to Jane Smith, daughter of Ali and Jane (King) Smith. Jane was born 15 Feb 1831 and died 1 Mar 1917. Samuel was a blacksmith and carpenter by trade. He served three years as a Confederate soldier with the 14th Virginia Calvary. He died 06 Jan 1907 in Roane Co., WV. Both Samuel B. and Jane (Smith) Wright, are buried in the Keen Cemetery on Hollywood Road, near Newton, WV. Children from this marriage were: Louisa, born 16 Apr 1854; Nancy E., born 21 Mar 1856; Albert L, born 19 Jul 1858; Mariah Jane, born 4 Aug 1860, (she married Henry Jackson Snodgrass); Samuel K., born 11 Feb 1863; Daniel L., born 29 July 1866; Virginia, born ca 1869-1870; and George A., born 23 Oct 1873.

This is Elkanah Smith and some of his extended family. Elkanah (1842-1924) is the gentleman on the far right, and the ladies to the far left are his wife Mary M. Stump Smith (1837-1923) and their daughter Lydia (1868-1922.) I cannot identify any of the others at this point, so any help in that regard would be greatly appreciated.
Elkanah, a son of John Smith, along with several of his brothers moved into the Roane County area from Gilmer County sometime during the 1850's. He and Mary Stump were wed on Nov 1, 1960. The couple had 7 children. In addition to farming, Elkanah was for some terms the assessor for the second district of Roane County and was a trustee of the Flat Fork Baptist Church.
This photo is a picture postcard, of the kind often taken by itinerant photographers, and probably dates to around 1920. In all likelihood this was taken on Elkanah's farm in the area of Smith Run/Griffith Run Road. There is at least a small measure of irony in the fact that the large white border was made by putting a special frame into the camera to leave room on the printed card to write the names and other captions. Unfortunately, the only marking on the card is on the reverse side, where the name "Ona" was written lightly in pencil. |

| The Family of Lindsey Fleming & Roxie (Nida) Smith, ca1922

Children l to r - Goldie, Clyde, Audrie, Georgia
Lind Smith was one of fourteen children of Lindsey Epison Smith and a devoutly religious man. He married Roxie Ellen Nida on 28 Mar 1915 at Newton. They had eight children and lived on a farm at Stoney Lonesome, a branch of Grannies Creek. He died in the snow on the road while walking to church services. Lindsey and Roxie are buried in the Smith Cemetery on Stony Lonesome near Newton, WV. The family Bible gives "Rocksey's" birth date as September 7, 1899. However, the Roane County Birth Records gives a birth date of 18 Jul 1898 and in another entry as 05 Sep 1900. I have accepted the family Bible as the correct date. Roxie helped to care for her sister, Annie Hensley, after Annie had a stroke. |

A story of this team appeared in The Times Record on Thursday, May 7, 1998 titled "That Special Season, Amma Baseball Club won 1930 county championship" and was written by Jack Nida, guest writer. The eight team league received front page coverage each week in The Times Record during the summer of 1930 and the championship playoffs were billed as The Little World Series. Nearly 2,000 people attended each of the three playoff games at Tariff and Tater Run ball fields.
