The Cottrill Family Cemetery marker for Rachel Hughes Cottrill is broken into over 50 pieces. I call it a puzzle because that's exactly what it is...with some missing pieces.  I have pieced enough of the inscription together to tell what it says: "In Memory of Rachel wife of William Cotterill  Born 1779 died July 16th 1860  Aged 81 years  Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
Rachel & William Cottrill's youngest son, Samuel R. Cotterill, was a stonemason & probably carved this one and several others at this cemetery. He also probably did those of his father, buried at Harmony U. M. Church Cem., Jane Lew, Lewis Co., WV, and two of his infant children buried there. All these markers have similar style and intricately carved features. Samuel was the only one of the children who spelled his name Cotterill and used that spelling on some of the markers at this cemetery, while others of Wm. & Rachel used Cottrill or Cottrell spelling.
